Qualification -
Unit of Competency MSS024019 - Collect and evaluate meteorological data
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge to set up basic, ground level meteorological equipment and collect and record reliable data. It also includes the ability to assess data quality, interpret significant data features and use the data to assist with analysing or processing other environmental monitoring measurements. This unit applies to environmental technicians working in a range of industry sectors, including environmental services; environmental compliance, auditing and inspection; solid and hazardous waste management, and site remediation; management of contaminated sites; geotechnical services and civil engineering; natural resource management. No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria
Element: Prepare for field work
  • Review job request to identify the equipment required and the meteorological parameters to be measured

Element: Identify hazards and read safe work procedures associated with the site, test methods and equipment used

Element: Confirm site location, access, timing and any client requirements

Element: Assemble all required equipment and materials and check that they are fit for purpose

Element: Stow equipment and materials to ensure their safe transport

Element: Arrange transport to site

Element: Liaise with appropriate personnel on arrival at site to ensure safety and minimise disruption to others

Element: Perform basic meteorological measurements
  • Select a location for the meteorological equipment at the site to achieve valid readings for the required parameters

Element: Install and check instrumentation and any recording or data logging equipment to ensure it is functioning correctly

Element: Confirm calibration status of meteorological equipment

Element: Perform measurements using ground level meteorological equipment

Element: Collect meteorological data using physical or electronic methods

Element: Ensure wind direction sensors are aligned or corrected to true north rather than magnetic north

Element: Verify meteorological data
  • Ensure that quality requirements for data are met

Element: Perform any required corrections, calculations and data manipulations and identify significant trends in data

Element: Check for anomalous data and take corrective action

Element: Verify that processed data meets requirements

Element: Interpret and apply meteorological information
  • Relate meteorological data to weather maps and other sources of meteorological data

Element: Associate meteorological conditions with related weather maps

Element: Compare weather patterns and data for different time periods and geographic locations

Element: Read and interpret meteorological data in terms of local atmospheric conditions

Element: Use meteorological data to interpret and assist with processing air and noise monitoring data

Element: Maintain a safe work environment
  • Use safe work procedures and protective equipment to ensure personal safety and that of others

Element: Minimise environmental impacts of meteorological measurements and generation of waste

Element: Collect and dispose of all waste in accordance with environmental and quarantine requirements and workplace procedures

Element: Report data and finalise documentation
  • Report field data in the required formats and expected timeframe

Element: Complete all required documentation

Element: Maintain the security and confidentiality of data and documentation in accordance with workplace requirements

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assignment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.

Observation Checklist

Tasks to be observed according to workplace/college/TAFE policy and procedures, relevant legislation and Codes of Practice Yes No Comments/feedback
